about

Many have benefited from the voice of Shane Claiborne, The Simple Way and associates of New Monasticism. Psalters are a music collective based in Philadelphia, friends and comrades of Shane. When I heard them play live a few years ago, they embodied the spirit and challenge of devotional dissent better than anything I’d heard. They articulated much of what I only felt, and more. They opened up a creative door for me, and provoked me to be truer to who I am.

So I wanted to honour them by using one of their songs, not least because I think it represents a really important voice. My version is very different to theirs…not just musically, but structurally and lyrically. I actually added a few lines in the second verse to make it fit with the arrangement, and to expand on some of the themes a little further. Even so, I hope it still carries some of the spirit and challenge of devotional dissent that they do so well.

lyrics

Come now and join the feast
From the greatest to the very least
Come on now and join the feast,
Come on here right now
Come now and join the feast,
Right here in the belly of the beast
Come on now and join the feast,
Come on here right now

Cops and soldiers you can come too
Just lay down your guns and come on through
Rich people get rid of your stuff
and poor people, there will be enough
Mighty ones come down from your thrones
And little ones you are not alone
Come on patriots, bring your flags,
We're washing feet and we'll need some rags

Kings and queens, smash your crowns
The King has taken Kinghood down;
Religious people let go of your rules
Let the sinners serve you food
Lazy man step up to the table
Make some food for those who aren’t able
Make sure everyone gets some
Then we’ll see the Kingdom…
